Amazon 75 Character Title Limit: What Happens to Listings That Ignore It

The Amazon 75 character title limit took effect on July 27, 2026. Titles over the limit get an AI generated replacement unless a seller reviews it within 14 days. What changed and what to do first.

Key takeaways

  • Amazon's 75 character title limit started on July 27, 2026, affecting all categories except media.
  • Titles exceeding 75 characters get replaced by an AI-generated version if not reviewed within 14 days.
  • Amazon added a 125 character Item Highlights field to supplement the shorter titles.
  • Each ASIN has its own 14-day review window, so there is no single deadline for sellers.
  • Unreviewed AI titles can impact search ranking and Sponsored Products ads before sellers notice.

The Amazon 75 character title limit took effect on July 27, 2026. The number is not the interesting part. What matters is what happens to an ASIN whose seller does nothing.

Titles above the limit are not truncated. Amazon generates a replacement using its own AI recommendations, surfaces it in the Review Listing Changes tool, and gives the seller 14 days to review, modify or approve it. Ignore the window and the recommendation is applied to the listing. Amazon has described the rollout as gradual and phased rather than enforced overnight, which is precisely why it slips past people: nothing visibly breaks on day one.

What the 75 character title rule applies to

The rule covers the Item Name field, spaces included, in every category except media. Books, music and video keep their longer titles. Everything else in the catalog is in scope.

For sellers who spent years engineering titles into keyword corridors, this is a structural change, not a cosmetic one. A 180 character title carrying brand, model, size, color, pack count and four use cases does not survive at 75. Something gets cut, and if you do not choose what, Amazon chooses for you.

Item Highlights: the 125 characters Amazon added back

Alongside the shorter title, Amazon introduced a field called Item Highlights, capped at 125 characters. Together the two fields give 200 characters of customer facing, searchable text.

Item Highlights renders differently by device. On mobile it sits under the bold title in lighter grey. On desktop it joins the title on one line, separated by a pipe. Amazon's guidance points it at materials, use cases, age ranges and compatibility, the attributes a shopper compares between two similar products, and explicitly not at repeating what the title already says.

Whether Item Highlights keywords carry the same ranking weight as title keywords has not been confirmed. Plan on the title carrying more.

Why the character limit is not the real deadline

Sellers read this change as a formatting problem. It is a governance problem. Somewhere in your catalog there are ASINs generating a pending recommendation right now, and the clock on each of them runs independently.

Three practical consequences:

  • The window is per listing, not per account. There is no single date to circle.
  • A rewritten title changes what the ASIN is indexed for. Ranking moves before revenue does, so the profit and loss statement tells you late.
  • Sponsored Products creative pulls from the title. A title you did not write can end up running in campaigns you are paying for.

What to do before Q4 traffic arrives

Sort the catalog by revenue and work down, not alphabetically. The top decile of ASINs is where an AI chosen title costs real money. The tail can absorb a default.

For each of those, write your own 75 character title and your own 125 characters of Item Highlights before Amazon proposes one. Approving your own version closes the window on your terms.

Then check the timing against the rest of the Q4 calendar. Peak fulfillment fees start on October 15 and the inbound cutoffs land before that, so a title that changes in week one of peak is the worst possible moment to be diagnosing a ranking drop.

The shape of this is familiar. It is the same pattern as the 12 month clock on toy test reports: a requirement with a per ASIN timer, no account level alarm, and consequences that only show up in sales data.

Amazon publishes changes of this kind through Seller Central News and documents listing field rules in the Seller Central help hub. The announcement and the seller reaction to it sit in the Seller Central forums thread on the new title requirements and fields.

Titles were never a formatting field. They are the largest keyword surface a seller controls, and for the first time Amazon will fill that surface in for you if you leave it blank.
