Sponsored Brands Custom Image Not Showing: Why

Sponsored Brands custom image not showing is the first stage of the product collection retirement. What Amazon confirms and what it changes for Q4.

Sponsored Brands Custom Image Not Showing: Why

Key takeaways

  • Sponsored Brands product collection ads no longer display custom images as of May 27, 2026.
  • Amazon replaces product collections with Sponsored Brands collections featuring auto-generated titles and up to 10 products.
  • New product collection campaigns convert to manual collections starting September 2026, with creation ending January 2027.
  • 1- and 2-ASIN campaigns continue serving but cannot add new ad groups after the format change.
  • Automatic collections use Amazon AI to group products, requiring proactive exclusion of unwanted ASINs.

A Sponsored Brands custom image not showing in your product collection ad is not a bug, and it is not a review delay. The console accepts the upload and the ad runs without it. That is the first stage of a staged retirement, and the first stage is silent: nothing fails, nothing warns you, and the creative you approved is not the creative shoppers see.

The replacement is Sponsored Brands collections, which Amazon announced on May 27, 2026. It is a different ad in every way that matters to a Q4 plan.

What replaces Sponsored Brands product collection ads

Collections comes in two modes, and Amazon's own guide sets the rules for both:

  • Manual collections. You pick 3 to 10 related products. All targeting types stay available. Amazon automatically generates the title for the collection.
  • Automatic collections. Amazon's AI groups products from your catalog based on your keyword targets and shopper search queries, generates the titles, and builds the landing experience. You can exclude specific ASINs from being featured.

Eligibility is Brand Registry plus three or more related products in the catalog. Amazon lists it as available across 21 marketplaces, including the United States, Canada, Mexico, Brazil, the United Kingdom, Germany, France, Italy, Spain, the Netherlands, Belgium, Poland, Sweden, Turkey, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, India, Singapore, Japan and Australia.

Read the two mode descriptions again and notice what is not in either one: a custom headline you wrote, and a lifestyle image you shot. Titles are auto-generated in both modes. The legacy product collection ad allowed 3 products with a custom headline and a brand logo. The new one allows up to 10 products and writes the copy itself.

Why your custom image is not showing, and which parts are confirmed

Here is where a seller needs to be careful about what is verified and what is reported.

Confirmed by Amazon: the Collections format, its two modes, the 3 to 10 ASIN range, the auto-generated titles, the Brand Registry requirement, the marketplace list, and the May 27, 2026 announcement date.

Reported by industry sources, not confirmed on an Amazon page we could reach: the retirement schedule itself. According to EcomCrew, new product collection campaigns convert to manual collections starting in September 2026, custom images submitted now are accepted but do not render, and in January 2027 product collection ad creation stops being supported through the console and through the API, while existing campaigns keep serving. Another industry writeup gives the same September 2026 and January 2027 dates. Earlier in the year, coverage of the January 28, 2026 rollout described the 3-ASIN minimum arriving and custom creatives going away, with existing one and two ASIN campaigns allowed to keep running but closed to new ad groups.

Treat the September and January dates as a strong working assumption to verify in your own advertising console, not as policy text. The check takes a minute: create a draft product collection campaign and see whether the console converts it to a manual collection.

What this changes for Q4 advertising

The planning consequences do not depend on the exact date, which is why they are worth acting on now.

Your creative budget moves. If lifestyle images stop rendering in this format, the photography and design spend earmarked for Sponsored Brands creative in Q4 buys nothing. Video and Store assets still use it. Product collection creative does not.

Your 1 and 2 ASIN campaigns are frozen assets. They continue serving, but the reported restriction is that you cannot add new ad groups to them. Any Q4 expansion of those campaigns has to be built as a new manual collection with at least 3 ASINs, which means picking the 3 to 10 ASINs before the traffic arrives, not during it.

Automatic collections is Amazon picking the products. For a catalog with thin coverage in a category, an AI grouping built from keyword targets can surface an ASIN you did not want in the ad. The exclusion control is the lever, and it needs configuring before spend flows, not after a bad week. The same reporting caution applies here as everywhere this year: placement and grouping decisions made by Amazon are only visible to you in reporting, and reporting is itself changing, with the legacy Sponsored Ads and DSP report pages retiring on December 31, 2026.

Before-and-after comparisons get harder. Blending a hand-written headline era with an auto-generated title era inside one campaign line means the year-over-year read on Sponsored Brands is measuring two different products. If you want a clean read, split the campaign at the switch date rather than editing in place. Anyone who dealt with the Amazon DSP move to a single global account and blended per-market reporting has already run this problem once.

What to do this week

  1. Open the advertising console and try to create a product collection campaign. Whatever the console does is the answer for your account, and it beats any published date.
  2. List every active Sponsored Brands campaign with fewer than 3 ASINs. Those are the ones that cannot take new ad groups.
  3. Stop commissioning lifestyle creative for this format until you have confirmed in your own account that it renders.
  4. Pick the 3 to 10 ASIN groupings you want for peak, manually, before peak fulfillment fees start on October 15 and attention goes elsewhere.
  5. Snapshot current Sponsored Brands performance now, so the comparison later has a baseline that predates the format change.

SellerKey reads the Ads API and stores your campaign and placement history in your own warehouse, so a format change that splits your reporting in two does not take the previous period with it. It does not create, edit or pause campaigns in your Amazon account.
